The Muslim armies had numerous encounters with the Persians during the later part of the Caliphate of Umar (r.a). The Muslims received the news that the Persian enemy forces were gathering in strength for a fight with the Muslims on the banks of Dijlah (River Tigris).
The Islamic forces decided to engage the enemy forces in combat and they rushed to the spot. They found that the enemy forces opposing them had gathered on the other side of the river. At this, Hajr bin Udayy addressed the Muslims. He said, "What? Is there nothing between you and your enemies save for this river? It is not for any soul to die save by the will of Allah. Is there not an appointed term for everyone? Saying this, he straightaway plunged his horse into the water, to swim over to the other side to engage the enemy in combat. Following his example, the other soldiers plunged their horses into the river and nobody drowned. The Persians watching the scene as it unfolded before their eyes were dumbfounded at the bravery of the Muslims. When the Muslims arrived on the other side, the Persians became unnerved by the Arab army and began to say "Deoan," which meant, "The supermen have arrived. After saying this, the Persians fled the scene, and the day was won over by the Muslim army. (Ibn Kathir-adapted)
