By Azizah Muslima
A breeze lifts the sheer white curtain

and i catch a glimpse of the crescent moon

Ramadhan will be upon us soon

my soul rouses to the memory of the muezzins call

the chill air sweeps over the sill

a sobering breath in its icy chill

and shaiytan trembles when he sees

the humbled saint upon his knees

i pull aside the curain and raise my eyes

the night sky is hung with numerous lamps

i inhale the air, which the rain has made damp

i recall similar nights beneath a brooding sky

when i prayerful wept

to be like one whose eyes but not heart slept

and shaiytan trembles when he sees

the humbled saint upon his knees

i reach up to shut the window as it has begun to rain

and recall when those hands trembled as i read the words

that so many generations before have heard

i recall the girl in the masjid seeking play

drawn into the musella by the burning frankinscence

and the hum of the reciters over their Qurans bent

and shaiytan trembles when he sees

the humbled saint upon his knees
