‘The ambassador was killed’.
‘Ambassador! By whom, grandpa?’
‘By the monarch of neighboring country himself, my child. Now kid, don’t stare me in disbelief. Actually this is how this story begins. The story of a small country; visible on the mid-eastern part of globe, only nine years old, having agriculture-based economy and bordered with Indian ocean and large monarchies around.
Actually in one of this monarchy, remembered in history as the most powerful, established and majestic empire ever, ambassador of this small country was cold-bloodedly murdered by their ruler. Not only that, the ruler of the super power monarchy also threatened they will bulldoze the small young country under her powerful army’s boots, ‘Doctrine of Pre-emptive’ strike exactly, as they call it; to nip the danger in bud’.
‘Rumors spread like wild fire in the small state. Villagers near border started packing to leave the area in fear of war, traders reviewed trade routes and business plans, word on war and current affairs started spreading and actually flourishing in town center, educational institutes, judicial and administration blocks, streets and not to forget, homes. The federal capital was also no exception. Extra security measures were though put in place; atmosphere remained tense. People were waiting very desperately for their beloved leader’s talk on this subject and who was the leader? Well folks, he was the head of state, head of government and the chief justice of country, also holding office of supreme military commander.’
‘But analysts argued what choice do the supreme leader has in these turbulent times. One thing is sure, war is not an option. Why? Well because are you planning to fight with one of the two super powers of the world, with her borders extended from far Asia to Africa. Also, this was time to cut the crops and get fruits of whole one year’s agro-efforts. Government’s financial position, being dependent on agricultural products, was also not in sound position. This leaves the leader with very few choices, despite being just and the one against which aggression was launched by killing the ambassador. Compromise seems better option.’
‘“The supreme leader is addressing the nation, reach the town center!” one day people heard this and ran to town center to listen to their brave, valiant and intellectual leader. When people gathered, he started his speech….’
‘What did the leader said, grandpa’
‘Well my child, before long, word reached longitude and latitude of country that leader declared avenge of ambassador death’s will be taken, after all this is how living nations respond to such incidents, with courage and dignity. People were asked to volunteer themselves for saving the honor of motherland and faith, philanthropists were asked to help in fulfilling the needs of army and government. And within no time, my kid, whole nations stood up like an iron wall, they started fasting due to lack of food but contributed everything they could to the government. The extent of responsibility and sentiment of responding to their dear leader’s call was such, that people donated jewelry, furniture, kitchen crockery, clothes, and everything they could think of. And why not, they knew their leader was the most honest, sincere and competent person this land has ever seen. His bravery and courage was second to none, actually it was his spirit, sentiments, actions and words that fuel nation to not only survive but flourish. He was not like usual head of state and emperors, rather he used to first set a role model of himself and then ask his nation to follow. Therefore, when the nation got a call from their leader, they knew if we are sufferings, then our leader’s sufferings and sacrifice must be at least twice of ours.’
‘Dear son, try to imagine those times. Sky wept when due to lack of food, people started eating leaves but contributed their camels and goats, sun astonished when one man contributed everything leaving behind not a single item in his home, moon lauded a poor person’s efforts who worked for whole night only to contribute his salary to the war fund and the earth felt proud that such persons are living on her chest. And this is how the army got prepared and on one fine morning, in the wee hours, army left the capital. All citizens, now only women, elderly and children left, said good-bye to army and then bowed down in front of God to pray for their success.’
‘The army traveled under the scorching sun on ruthless desert, with lack of food and transport means, but with content heart and sky-high devotion and sentiments to follow their leader. Leader himself, shared everything with his army, he was not like sitting in shade, while his men sweating under sun, No, rather he used to get equal share of everything, good or bad, as any normal person of his nation used to. He was a man of extraordinary genius, in those times, when there was no hype of human rights, no agency/NGO to preach equal rights for all; he actually ensured those rights for his people. And now in this battle hours, he was the bravest one as well, it seemed all good qualities intellectuals, warriors, statesman, leaders were mixed in some bowl, improved and then bestowed to this person – the supreme leader. He bear all the hardships of the traveling, reached border of his country and then surprisingly, left his border behind, entered No-Man-Area, crossed enemy’s border and while on their lands, ordered his army to take positions, sending tremors to the super power’s monarchy.’
‘Such bravery!’
‘Yes, my son. And know what was the impact of it, the tyrant monarch succumbed. They thought “how come a small nation cross our border and challenge us, certainly they must be very powerful and strong ones, and certainly reports of our intelligence that the country is small and poorly equipped were wrong”. So, they chose to keep quiet and shun idea of attacking the ‘just nation’. Now my dear, brave leader stayed their with his army for two weeks and when he saw, tyrant has gave-in even before arriving on the battle ground, he returned with his army conquering the neighboring areas and the money/stuff of the tyrant nation’s border areas. And this is how, one day this army returned safely back to their capital city with certainly better position in world map as strong, stable and valiant nation. All because of one man’s valiant orders and courageous example, and whole nation’s sincerity to follow and obey’.
‘My child let me now put in place missing dots in the story. The country was first Islamic state on Arabia, federal capital was Medina, tyrant monarchy was Persian Empire, expedition was ‘Ghazwa-e-Tabuk’ (The Battle of Tabuk) and the leader was, the last prophet, the first ‘mujahid’, Muhammad (may peace and blessing of Allah almighty, shower on him, his family and his followers). And now my child you tell me, what lesson we have, to learn from this story.’
‘Grand pa, we have quite a few lessons to learn. One, there is never a compromise between the ‘good’ and ‘bad’, because any such compromise would only lead to bad’s benefits. Therefore, the good respond and even go to the extent of armed conflict to save its honor and dignity. Two, hardships and pain are part of life, and one see them more, if he/she is on the path of Allah almighty, but no individual should get disturb over them, think about the prophet (peace be upon him) who faced more difficulties than any other person on earth. Third, ‘jihad’ is the ongoing struggle against the evil. One sometimes wages jihad with himself/herself to restrain from doing evil, and sometimes with other people on earth, who determined to spread evil and eliminate truth. Jihad is something a muslim is bound to do, every minute, every hour and every day of his/her life to practice Islam totally. To truly understand the meanings and see live examples of Jihad, one should go through the seerat (account of life) of the last prophet and the first mujahid, Muhammad (may peace and blessing of Allah almighty, shower on him, his family and his followers).’
‘So true, my child! Now its time to go to bed, say good night to your parents, recite sleep prayers and ayat-al-kursi, brush your teeth. Good night’.
O’Allah, shower blessings on Muhammad and his followers like you blessed Abraham and his followers, and forgive believers and let them follow path of your beloved messenger. Surely you are the most kind and most exalted in might.
