Translated by A.Q. Alidost
Madina was known as the center of Islamic schools and knowledge. People used to go there from far places to study Islam, Fiqh and Hadith.
One of these people was Onwan Basri who traveled to Madina to study Islam.
At first, he went to Anas bin Malik to study Hadith.
Another teacher was Imam Jaafar who happened to be out of town, but when he got back, Onwan couldn’t wait, and rushed to the Imam and asked if he could study under him.
Imam Jaafar replied: "I am a busy person, I do not have time. Why dont you go back to Anas bin Malik and finish studying with him?"
Onwan was heart broken! He thought that Imam Jaafar does not like him. This rejection was very bitter to Onwan. “Am I not good enough for Imam Jaafar’s school? Why would Prophet’s grandson reject me?”, these thoughts haunted Onwan.
In tears, he went to Masjid al-Madina, the second holiest place, and prayed that Imam Jaafar would accept him in his classes.
He then went to visit Imam Jaafar. After exchanging greetings, he noticed that the Imam is warm, friendly and welcoming.
Onwan: "I have prayed to Allah that He would soften your heart towards me, and that I could benefit from your knowledge. I hope that my prayers have been answered."
Imam Jaafar smiled and explained: "Knowledge of Allah and His light are not acquired by going door to door sitting with teachers.
This knowledge of Truth is not given in classes. It is a Light that Allah gives to whomever He wills. If you are seeking true knowledge and His light, then seek it within yourself.
Seek the knowledge with good deeds.
Seek this from Allah, and He will establish this knowledge in your heart."
