Considering the marriage practices of Muslims in America over the past twenty years, it is conceivable that the legalization of homosexual union could one day be acceptable. The absence of legal marriage, high divorce rate and unmonitored polygyny has produced a jahaliyah state of anything goes. Moreover, I am convinced that a sizeable portion of the Muslim community has adopted the moral standards of non-muslims and are living in open Zina. I have been a witness to the erosion of marriage and family life amongst muslims in America. There was this golden period for a time, especially before the late century whereby the vast majority of American muslim marriages nationwide were solid because of mutual modesty and respect. During that time indigenous American Imams often sought licensing from the state in order to preside over legal Islamic marriage ceremonies. Small pockets of men would attempt to marry without a contract, marriage license or public ceremony, only to be openly denounced not only by the Imam, but by other muslims in general. But then the sect mentality began to emerge. Converts were practicing sunnah but not committed enough to Islam to take on real muslim names or integrate themselves as Muslims living in American society. They were "Abu Bakr" at the masjid and "Bob" to their friends, co-workers and classmates. This sect-like embrace of Islam began to move into family life issues. Communities, mainly in the northeast, developed marriage practices explained as sunnah by whoever was their local leader. A few formed commune type communities where the marriage practices were also dictated by whoever was leading the group. American Muslim Women were expected to cover Islamically at school and on the job, remain chaste until marriage and behave in an unflinching respectable manner.

American Muslim men on the other hand, were openly dating, having big weddings with impregnated girlfriends, and explaining away sexual misconduct as a sin forgived of men by Allah. Such men operated often without impunity in the community. Eventually every masjid had a couple not legally married or a brother with another wife. This was usually a non-muslim girlfriend met at school or a nightclub, imposed upon the muslim wife. Other communities who felt themselves on the sunnah initiated innovative marriage practices. Poor, multi-children laden, non-muslim women were married to dignify their status and thus introduced mass polygyny. Therefore, pockets of American Muslims adopted the attitudes and behavior of the kuffar. Amongst the non-muslim Americans there was a glorification of ghetto street-life and being hard. A man should be a player. A player not only had more than one woman, but multiple women who accepted his philandering, competed for his attention, supported him financially and were glad to do it all because he had it like that. Songs labeled a man a fool who took care of his woman. Other popular songs advocated openly taking and having someone who was not yours. "You down with OPP (other peoples property)!" was heard on the street, clubs, schools, and homes as the proud response was "YEA - you know me!" (Meaning of course!)Social rhetoric at the time advocated open rebellion against the American system. For some American converts especially young college students and inner city residents, the system was the kuffar. Everything about the kiffar was technically a thing to be rejected. The influx of wahhabism into the American muslim communities was strangely compatible to this culture of defiance. The combination devastated whole sections of the American muslim community and (pagebreak)
