Like many of you, I have been instilled with the fundamental precept of “obeying your parents”.  This is not only wajib in Islam, but it is also a form of worship, for Allah (SWT) is pleased with those who obey and respect their elders, (especially Mom and Dad). But let us say, one day at dinner time your mother turns to you after passing the salad and says, “You know, I really think you should stop wearing hijab and go out and dye your hair. You would look SO much prettier....”

Or let us say, your father is sitting with you, watching the evening news, and on the commercial break he looks to you and says “Son, that’s enough of that praying-business now, go out and party with some girls.” (Astagfirullah).

Given these hypothetical circumstances, what would you do? Would you be the obedient son or daughter that you are and just submit to their propositions? Or would you fight them on these issues?  Maybe as your reading this, you’re laughing at the mere thought of such a situation surfacing. I understand that in most households, this scenario would be unlikely; but it is certainly not improbable.

When it comes down to you and your Deen, nothing should be compromised. Take for example, the actions Ali ibn Talib, (ra) the cousin, and son-in-law of the Noble Prophet Muhammad, (peace and blessings be upon him). “Ali was ten years old when the Divine Message came to Muhammad (peace be on him). One night he saw the Prophet and his wife Khadijah bowing and prostrating. He asked the Prophet about the meaning of their actions. The Prophet told him that they were praying to God Most High and that Ali too should accept Islam. Ali said that he would first like to ask his father about it. He spent a sleepless night, and in the morning he went to the Prophet and said, "When God created me He did not consult my father, so why should I consult my father in order to serve God?" and he accepted the truth of Muhammads message.” (Source: islamic-world.net)

A wise man once said that it is difficult to stand up to your enemies, but it is a lot more difficult to stand up to those whom you love and care for. And while most every parent wants what is best for their child, there comes a point in every person’s life where they must learn to decide what is right for them. So if you ever come into a difficult situation with your parents and your Deen, please don’t forget to remember and to pray to the One who created both you and your parents. After all, it is He who offers the best guidance.
