yaa shaykh
it has been a long time coming
too long indeed.
searching for the answers
to life’s most persistent questions
in the dark corner of your shadowy room
while outside the night bird sings... yaa shaykh
take care
like the beggar
to remember your Lord
and from whence
your sustenance comes
without the mercy of your Sustainer
you face a certain doom

your beard my brother
is no protection
and your cloak even less
a big beard and wool cloak
long and black
they will not get you success!

yaa shaikh
do you think your beard
will get you into heaven?
or your long black cloak?
what use is it
[they will not protect you
from your sins

in case you have forgotten
it’s all about the heart
[and the mercy of Allah]
you’ll leave this world
as you entered,
naked and alone.

endure a while longer
patience is the way and the secret
all success and understanding
comes from this one attribute

you will leave this world one day
naked as the day you arrived
with nothing in your hand.
your heart my friend
there is the key_
if not right it will keep you
from the promised land.

yaa shaykh
your bowings and prostrations
they are wonderful to see
but that alone will do you no good
they’ll not secure your success
much less infinite happiness

it is your heart, my dear friend
your heart _to be sure.
you must understand
only this _and His mercy
will bring your victory

so keep it right and pure
your heart that is.
only this [and time will tell_
if the morning bird will sing!
