It came from down south only some years ago, but now its gone,
He woke up with only a handful of the dawn.
When Ali stood and said he would protect the Prophet,
Did he think hed have to protect his sons from the onslaught of profit?
Then came Muslim sins sparking war amongst Muslim sons,
And would the praised one cry for his dear little ones?
And the men there made a solemn vow to appear anywhere.
They said, O Messenger of God, we will fight forever, and we do not care
If the enemy surrounds us or overwhelms us.
But here we are now, and everywhere
We look, we see the darkness brought by glittering gold.
Then came the chain of succession broken, when they said, Oh Ali,
Step down and face reality!
But I face reality, and I tell you, I dont like what I see.
Then the chain was wrapped tighter around, and they said, Oh Husain,
You cant stop the rain
Once it starts to fall.
But I fear he saw all the good in the world, and asked, Is that all?
Thus he fell that thus we could stand,
That once in a while a Muslim might raise his hand
And say enough of the darkness! For it was nonsense,
But purity painted away by the brushes of expansion.
He breathes no more that tyranny might know its own breaths,
And how ephemeral they are.
How the stars have spilled away, into the sea,
How the great men have dropped away, leaving but men like me.
When was it we changed the direction of prostration?
It might have been on the rug of territorial expansion,
Or in the masjid built for monetary satisfaction.
Yet Yazid felt it necessary to make known the new direction.
There is no Pharoah for me to serve, there is no caravan of Qarun I deserve,
But the wealth passed back and forth, the way stations of wayfarers,
And I see Gods words before me, and as I close the cover, I wonder,
Was it really us that was described as the best of all nations?
The rain started to fall, and I tell you,
The silence of their blood washes over us yet.
Oh my brothers, if you are believers, cry not for Granada,
But instead cry for Karbala.
Oh my family, if you are faithful, weep not for Vienna,
But instead cry for Salah ad-Din and his men.
Did they travel the earth to bring us together, that we might fall apart again?
Qutuz had only time to hold us in the eye of goliath,
And when the giant fell, he brought down with him that which brought him down.
You know Andalusia is silent and Sarajevo is despondent,
But still there are those who, from time to time,
decide they need to adjust what we all see.
Then if there was another Umar, there would be no colonization,
If there was another Abu Bakr, there would be no division,
And if there was Husain, there would be no more Karbala. Last update : 16-07-2002 18:06
