I sit and I spot her the look of frustration yet determination. She stands in the back prayer line because, “that is the best one for women,” between her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, newly arrived from “Back home.” Married only 1 year, newly converted to this religion she ‘thought’ she was beginning to understand. Now she is sorting through a whole new set of ‘rules’. Rules up to now others hadn’t informed her of because, “they don’t know, and this is how it should be done.”

Why is she standing well, prostrating now, thinking about this “Allahu Akbar” instead of concentrating on her prayer. “AsSalaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,” well another prayer wasted. “AsSalaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah.”

The chatting begins instantly doesn’t anybody besides her hear the Imam reading Quran? She thinks she might as well listen to him since she thought her way through the prayer, but who can hear over the din of women and children.

Well mother-in-law and sister-in-law are calling from the doorway. They must be home before the “Egyptian, Lebanese, Syrian, Brazilian, translated of course because Arabic makes it ok,” soap opera they follow comes on.

Well another 45 minutes at the Masjid over. She’ll try again tomorrow InshaAllah.
