Many non-Muslim and Muslims consider Eid-ul-Fitr as celebrating the end of Month of Ramadhan. A day of feast & over eating. Being joyful that a painful month of "not eating" is over! No! It is not a celebration of an end. It is celebration of a beginning… The word "fitr" is a unique word and is very difficult to translate. It indicates "start" as in "Allah is Faatir-ul-Samawaat", Allah is the initiator (creator)of the heavens. "Fitr" means to start something which was never started before. What does this have to do with our Eid? Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrating a new start, a new beginning.

This is how Muslim believers (Mumeneen) could celebrate the Eid: Possibly wake up before Fajr, make Ghusul (shower), put on new clean clothes, pray Fajr, recite Quran, make dua, eat a date and walk to Eid prayer bare-feet, glorifying Allah by Takbeer and Tasbeeh.

Stand firm, shoulder to shoulder, next to other believers who are glorifying Allah and thanking Him for such a blessed Month, such great nights and such great forgiveness. The believer’s heart is sad that the Holy Month of Ramadhan has passed. What a great unique Month! But their heart is joyful because their sins have been forgiven and they are about to begin a fresh start with unique set of "new year resolutions".

Their hearts are assured by the remembrance of the glorious name of Allah. Surely remembering Allah assures the hearts! Once the two rakat are over, they sit and listen to their learned leader who would remind them of such a great month that has passed. Then all together, they will raise their hands as helpless slaves towards their Creator, asking for more strength. They ask to be more human and less animal, to be closer to Allah and more distant from Shaytaan. To be more clean in thought, in speech and in action.

Once the prayer is finished, they shake hands, hug and wish each other a happy new beginning. There is no grudge, no enmity. All you see is unity, regardless of race or sect. What a glorious gift is Eid! What a wonderful bounty is Islam. Which other religion offers such a magnificent way of celebrating humanity?! Lets prepare for that great day by doing our best, kicking our bad habits and sins during this holy Month. Lets be new people. Lets have a wonderful Eid!
