I have always wanted to write this article, but I am aware it is a dangerous and sensitive topic. Before you judge me and what I am saying, read to the end.
I pity the feminist. But then they are inevitable in the non-muslim world. The opinion of gender equality goes so completely against the social norm, it has to be given a name, feminism, as if it were a new concept taken up by a marginalised few. And as with most new concepts, a select portion have rebelled to a ridiculously large degree. There are many who genuinely strive to achieve equality, but a select few, in their feminist quest, are heading towards female dominance.
Disguising their sexist attitude of "men are stupid, womyn clever" as "striving towards equality", they have effectively become hypocrites. They dont belong anywhere, forced into limbo. They have abandoned their stereotypical, maternal posts and are head-butting their way into building and other prohibited jobs. I agree completely that a woman is capable of any job and must be considered equal to men for the top seats, but I dont agree with the current reasoning behind this opinion. Men and women are not the same.
Before you dimiss me for a passive, timid, stereotypical female (which I am not since I am going to study medicine insha Allah to work for my own income in the future) think carefully about what I am saying. Men and women are equal but diffferent. The difference is not in quality or quantity, but in nature. The undebatable biological differences are obvious. A mans body is generally stockier with a smaller percentage of fat than womens and the larger amount of testosterone means they have a greater potential to build muscle. Even evolutionarily, for the religion cynics, the woman should be more caring to ensure her child is well looked after before and after birth to make sure there is more success of it passing on its genes.
Were they only to look towards Islam, they would find the solution. It is from Islam that the tradition of burying daughters stopped because it provided the perfect solution. Daughters were buried because it was their familys burden to pay for the marriage with money they wouldnt get back since the daughters couldnt earn anything. The Islamic solution, that the mans family pay for the wedding, seems obvious, but clearly not as obvious as solving the problem by killing the girls and not having a wedding in the first place!
It is because I am a muslim that I know I dont have to fight for equality with men; I know I dont have to worry I wont find the job I want because of my gender; I have a place and job in society that gives me importance, for as a mother, heaven lies at my feet. I dont have to come up with a name to call my attitude to equality because it already has a name. Islam. It already is the religious norm. Muslim women throughout history had this knowledge. Aisha, the Prophets (PBUH) wife, was one of the most educated people of her time with extensive knowledge in fields such as philosophy, medicine, astronomy, literature etc.
The Muslim woman is perhaps the most empowered woman in history. It is true that many males and females dont know these things and follow different opinions, but they are Muslims who have strayed. Look at the Quraan and follow its guidance, for it provides us with the perfect solutions, since we are obviously incapable of coming up with solutions ourselves. I hope I have managed to dispel any criticisms you had and shown you that Islam is the most perfect, beautiful and fair religion for all genders, all ages and all races. Islam is equality.
