God has taught man the use of the pen - the means of expression. All people can and do write. Even if it is only letters to friends and family. Everyone has a unique story to tell.
The tools and mechanics of writing are vocabulary and grammar, both very necessary and important. But the real essence of writing is vision, experience, knowledge, and freedom of mind.
Grammar is the mechanics of writing like a car is to a journey. The road is the vision and experience of the writer.
It has been said that the unexamined life is not worth living. To write effectively - to tell a meaningful story - to express beneficial ideas one must examine their life. Where have they been, who have they met, what have they done.
A young person whose life is short can experience things vicariously by reading.
To write one must read - everything good. Learn of other peoples’ lives, increase your vocabulary- look up words that you don’t know. Writers are sometimes called “wordsmiths.” As a blacksmith’s tools are iron and heat, wordsmith’s tools are words. Words are symbols of ideas. Words or language develop the mind - the real person.
Writing is a conversation using your pen. Keep a daily journal. Use a free flow of consciousness. Just write what ever comes to mind. Fiction is not invention. It is reports, sometimes slightly changed, of what we see and experience in life.
Don’t be afraid to write. God gave you that gift. Last update : 07-02-2003 01:49
