Nuts to cultural interpretations on Islam; the haram twists and turns left-over from non-Muslim society that creep into practiced Islam. You know what I mean, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, marrying your daughters to the Quran and turning them into imitation nuns, denying them the right to vote, the right own property, run businesses, to earn inheritance. Nuts to it all, cause it’s all haram, and you have rights clearly stated in the Quran. Defend your rights! Allah entitled you to them and no one can take them away! Rights of Inheritance and Property Ownership

“And do not covet what Allah has given some of you more than others; the men shall have their due share according to what they have earned, and the women shall have their due share according to what they have earned. So pray to Allah for His Bounty, most surely Allah is watching over everything.” The Holy Qur’an 4:32

“Unto the men (of a family) belongs a share of that which parents and near-kindred leave, and unto the women a share of that which parents and near-kindred leave, whether it be little or much, a legal share.” The Holy Qur’an 4:77

Islamically, men get double the share of women. This seems unfair when no one explains the reason to you. The reason is that the man’s wife and children are legally entitled to his share as well; whereas, no one is entitled to the woman’s share. Man has to pay for his family, woman has to pay only for herself, even if she is married, because her husband is obliged to provide for her.

Rights to Choose a Spouse and Rights of Husbands and Wives

‘A virgin girl must not enter wedlock until she gives permission to do so. And a divorcee, or a widow should also be asked approval of the proposing man.” As said by the Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him, on the authority of Bukhari.

“The most believing of you are those who possess best morals. The best men are those best to their wives.” Said by the Prophet, narrated by Tirmidhee.

“And they (women) have rights similar to those of men in a just manner.” The Holy Qur’an, 2:228

Rights to Education and Honor

“Seeking knowledge is compulsory for each and every male and female Muslim.” Said by the Prophet, on the authority of Baihaqee.

“Women are but equal brethren to men.” Said by the Prophet, narrated by Tirmidhee.

“Only an honorable man treats women with honor and integrity, and only a mean, deceitful and dishonorable man humiliates and insults women.” Said by the Prophet, narrated by Ibn Asaker.

“He whosever has three daughters, or three sisters, or two daughters, or two sisters, and is very kind to them, demonstrating nice company to them and fears Allah in their treatment, will enter paradise.” Said by the Prophet, narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhee.

Spiritual Equality

“Men who surrender unto Allah, and women who surrender,
And men who believe, and women who believe,
And men who persevere, and women who persevere,
And men who are humble, and women who are humble,
And men who give alms, and women who give alms,
And men who fast, and women who fast,
And men who guard their modesty, and women who guard their modesty
And men who invoke Allah much, and women who invoke Allah much,
Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a vast reward.”
The Holy Qur’an, Surah Al-Ahzab, 33-35

“He (Allah) it is who did create you from a single soul, and there from did make his mate that he might take rest in her.” The Holy Qur’an, Surah Al-A’raf, 189

“Do not stop women from going to the Mosques” As said by the Prophet of Allah, on the authority of Ibn Hanbal.

Equal Punishment

“The adulterer and the adulteress, scourge you each of them with a hundred lashes…” The Holy Qur’an, Surah An-Nur, 2

“As for the thief, both male and female, cut off their hands. It is the punishment of their deeds, an exemplary punishment from Allah. Allah is Mighty, Wise.” Surah Al-Maidah, 38

Rights of Divorce

Burairah, a slave freed by Lady Aisha divorced her husband and refused to take him back. When the Prophet asked her to take him back, she said “Do you order me, O Messenger of Allah?” He said “No, but I am an intercessor.” She said “I don’t want him.” She did not take him back. Her divorce was valid and allowed by the Prophet of Allah. (On the authority of Ibn al-Athir)

Muslim women have way more rights than these. To learn more, read Muslim Women Warriors by Assad Nimer Busool, or Gender Equity in Islam by Jamal Badawi.
