Thanksgiving, like many Western holidays and observances, has unsavory roots that have been obscured by innocuous modern usage.
The landing of the Englishman on Plymouth Rock was not religious refuge; it was an invasion of the land of Native Americans who welcomed them, gave them food, and refuge. They were repaid with rape, slaughter, and the usurpation of their land. On June 20, 1674 the governing council of Charleston, Massachusetts proclaimed Thanksgiving Day to thank God for their victory over the “heathen Natives of this land.”
Now Americans celebrate the day with family and feast and to thank God for their contemporary victories over those less fortunate.
During the lunar month of Ramadan, that falls this year during the Thanksgiving season, over 1 billion Muslims in the world over and including over 6 million in America observe the fast of the Holy Month of Ramadan. This includes fasting, praying, reading scripture, doing charitable acts for those less fortunate and thanking God for His many Blessings.
